The Royalists, founded in 2017, is a monarchist organisation and pressure group which supports the Monarchy of the United Kingdom. The Royalists states that its mission is: "to preserve the institution of the Monarchy through advocacy, education, and research".[1] As of 2024, Andrew Rosindell is the current honorary president, and James Evans is the chairman.
History
[edit]The organisation was founded in 2017 to defend the British monarchy[2] against organised rebublicanism. In 2023, the group announced that it had appointed Romford MP Andrew Rosindell as its president to serve in an honorary capacity.
Objectives
[edit]The objectives of The Royalists are to (1) disseminate literature and foster pride in the institution of the Monarchy; (2) oppose organised republicanism and interest groups intending to imperil the Throne and Constitution of the United Kingdom; (3) provide open and freely accessible educational material.[3] The group has other established principles, including the preservation of the House of Lords' hereditary peers, and the established Churches of England and Scotland[4]
Activities
[edit]In November 2023, the group criticised republicans protesting the State Opening of Parliament, which it said would "trigger flight responses" in horses of the Household Cavalry and could "cause serious harm to cavalrymen or those who are assembled along the processional route".[5] In response to news that Mayor of London Sadiq Khan would not place a permanent statue of Elizabeth II on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth, the organisation launched a petition[6] which amassed over 57,000 signatures[7]
