Draft:The Origin of Pineapple Chunks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pineapple Chunks (later known as Pineapple Lumps by other confectionery manufacturers) are a soft, chewy pineapple flavoured confection coated in chocolate. They were first created by Regina Confections Ltd in Oamaru, New Zealand.

History

In the interests of historical accuracy, the origin of Pineapple Chunks is documented below.[1]

Pineapple Chunks were first created by Regina Confections Ltd in Oamaru in 1952. The Founder and Managing Director of Regina Confections Ltd was Jack McNamara who as well as being a registered accountant learned the art of confectionery production in the 1930’s at two Dunedin based companies: The Phoenix Company Ltd and Romison’s Confectionery.

Contrary to popular belief Charles Diver did not invent Pineapple Chunks, a marketing story mistakenly stated on previous Rainbow Confectionery packaging and referenced in the media. Charles Diver was indeed an employee of Regina and involved in the production process of Pineapple Chunks, but it’s important to document that he did not create the concept.[1] The Regina Factory Manager in the early 1950s was Charles McLaughlin who was a qualified Confectioner. Together Jack McNamara and Charles McLaughlin experimented and consulted on many confectionery recipes, one of which was Pineapple Chunks.[1]

Upon consensus of the final Pineapple Chunk recipe, the production process involved boiling together the ingredients under the supervision of Charles McLaughlin - the Chief Confectioner at Regina. It was then delivered in liquid form to the Baker-Perkins Master Machine which moulded the Pineapple Chunks prior to chocolate coating.[2] The foreman in charge of this stage of the process was Charles Diver who competently supervised the staff on this machine.[1] [3]

To maintain quality control of all Regina Products, including Pineapple Chunks, Jack McNamara frequently provided staff with take-home samples for feedback from family and friends. By the mid 1950s Pineapple Chunks had become a leading sales line for Regina to the extent that other manufacturers sought to emulate the product.  Given Regina had registered the name Pineapple Chunks, other brands such as Cadbury & later Pascall created their own versions of the product and named them Pineapple Lumps.

Regina’s successor, Rainbow Confectionery Ltd [4], continue to manufacture this iconic Kiwi confection from the same factory on the Thames Highway in Oamaru and still call them by their original registered name, Pineapple Chunks.
