The Nollywood Reporter

[edit]

The Nollywood Reporter (ISSN: 2833-0102) is an American magazine and website, which focuses on Nigeria's film industry that is famously referred to globally as Nollywood.

Nollywood[1] as moniker for the film industry in Nigeria is a major sector of the Nigerian economy. However, prior to the advent of The Nollywood Reporter[2] on 10 August 2022, no major publication was dedicated to reporting the film industry in Nigeria in a very professional manner except for some blogs.

Nollywood reportage as an adjunct sector of the Nigerian economy, which is undeserving of a major journalistic coverage, seems to suggest that the industry is not considered an essential part of the Nigerian economy. Unfortunately, that is not true since the Nigerian movie industry is currently ranked the second largest film industry[3] in the world, The Nollywood Reporter approaches the industry seriously as deserving of a dedicated coverage. with every ethical consideration.

In 2016, the International Monetary Fund said that the industry accounted for "N 853.9 billion ($7.2 billion), or 1.42 percent of Nigeria’s GDP."[4] However, in 2022, THISDAY reported that Nollywood "contributed 2.3 per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product."[5]

In an unpublished document filed with Nigerian Copyright Commission[6] in 2023, the founder of The Nollywood Reporter, 'Jamin Ohwovoriole (Ph.D.) stated that the publication aims to "objectively promote the Nigerian film industry globally in the context of professionalism that meets international standards." And "As a watchdog, the activities of The Nollywood Reporter would encourage best practices suitable for industry stakeholders and consumers of the products that the industry produces." Lastly, he said, "As watchdogs, The Nollywood Reporter would always hold the industry accountable for the messages that it conveys about Nigeria to Nigerians and the international community.

The Nollywood Reporter is published by Rhythm Media Group LLC, which is a Florida State based media company
