The Legend of Mir 1 (Korean: 미르의 전설) is a sprite-based isometric 3-D massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Korean-based WeMade Entertainment and ActOZ Software.
History
[edit]Development Background
[edit]Around 1998, online games with graphical interfaces, known as Multi User Games, began to evolve from the text-based Multi User Dungeons. At that time, most online games drew inspiration from existing comics. ActOZ Soft. chose to develop "The Legend of Mir" with an original oriental theme for a more creative worldview and narrative, rather than relying on pre-existing materials which could be restrictive. They introduced the concept of a group dynamic not present in other games at the time, along with user communication that is often overlooked online, as part of a system of complementary roles.
Since its inception, "The Legend of Mir" has seen significant enhancements, including an expanded world and a new game system introduced in December 1999 with "The Legend of Mir - The Battle of the Overlord[1]." and despite the game being discontinued in 2001 in favour of its successor "The Legend of Mir 2", It was later revived in 2024 as an open source project by the Legend of Mir Community Network under the codename: Carbon[2]
Release
[edit]The Legend of Mir, a pioneering MMORPG developed by WeMade Entertainment[3] and ActOZ Software[4], captivated players with its immersive fantasy world when it was released in November of 1998[5]. As one of the earliest online multiplayer games in South Korea, it set a precedent for the gaming industry with its innovative gameplay and community features. The game's setting, inspired by Eastern mythology, offered a vast, mystical land for players to explore, filled with diverse terrains, formidable monsters, and intricate quests. The character progression system allowed for a high degree of customization, enabling players to tailor their skills and abilities to their play style. Despite its eventual discontinuation in 2001, The Legend of Mir's legacy lives on, influencing a generation of games that followed and maintaining a cult following even years after its servers were closed. The game's impact on the MMORPG genre is still felt today, as it laid the groundwork for the social and interactive elements that are now standard in online gaming. The Legend of Mir's contribution to the evolution of online gaming is undeniable, marking a significant chapter in the history of video games.
