Paul Massey, known professionally as the DustRoom, is a Sheffield-based drum & bass, breakbeat, and future bass producer. For over 25 years, Massey has been known online as the DustRoom, using the name across various websites, forums, and platforms such as Discord. Initially adopted as a username, the DustRoom became his DJ alias, and later, his brand on Instagram and in music production.
Early Career
[edit]Paul’s musical journey began in 1994, experimenting with a vast collection of classic analogue gear, including legendary synths, drum machines, and samplers such as the Roland TB-303, Juno 60, SH-101, Sequential Circuits, Moog, Korg, and Access Virus. These tools laid the foundation for his distinctive sound. Under the moniker the DustRoom, he established himself as a DJ, with a regular House music slot on the now-defunct Freakin internet radio.
His long-standing use of the name on forums and platforms helped build his online presence long before it became synonymous with his music.
the DustRoom
[edit]Initially gaining prominence on Instagram under the handle the DustRoom, where he amassed over 15,000 followers, Massey became known for his motorcycle-related content. This following led to collaborations with energy drink and clothing companies, blending his passion for motorcycling with his lifestyle brand.
In 2024, after a period of musical hiatus, Massey revived the DustRoom name for his music, drawing on jam sessions during the COVID-19 lockdowns to create fresh drum & bass, breakbeat, and future bass tracks. Within just a few months, his new sound captured attention on platforms like Spotify, racking up over 40,000 streams and featuring in more than 300 playlists.
Legacy
[edit]In 2020, Massey performed a live DJ set as a tribute to Keith Flint of The Prodigy, commemorating the first anniversary of Flint’s passing. The performance was widely recognised within the electronic music community.
