The Chenab Times is an independent digital news platform based in India, established in July 2017.[1] The platform publishes news in regional languages such as Sarazi and Bhaderwahi, in addition to English and Urdu.[2][3] It was founded and is led by journalist Anzer Ayoob.[4]
History
[edit]The Chenab Times was launched in July 2017 in Thathri, Doda, with a focus on local issues such as development, infrastructure, and healthcare in the Chenab Valley.[5] It also covers national and international news.[6]
On 21 January 2021, the platform introduced short daily news bulletins in Sarazi and Bhaderwahi languages, along with Urdu. These were among the first efforts to broadcast news in these endangered languages.[3][7]
In 2022, The Chenab Times received a nomination for the "Best News Portal Award" from the Pahari Core Committee for promoting local languages.[3][6]
In November 2023, it launched Chenabich Kashir, a video news bulletin in the Kashmiri language.[8]
Controversy
[edit]In November 2024, The Chenab Times faced legal threats from the Jammu and Kashmir government for a report on the detention of an environmental activist under the Public Safety Act. The government argued that the report could disrupt law and order.[1] The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)[9] and DIGIPUB News India Foundation criticized the government's actions, urging it to respect press freedom.[10][11] The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the Omar Abdullah government for allegedly threatening The Chenab Times, after it reported on the detention of environmental activist Rehmatullah Padder under the Public Safety Act (PSA).[12]
The Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), a government department, objected to the tone and content of The Chenab Times report, claiming it misrepresented administrative actions and portrayed them negatively. They asserted that the report was skewed to favor a detained individual, potentially inciting public unrest.[13] The outlet, however, stated that their reporting did not incite any law and order disruptions.[11][14]
