[edit]In November 2021, it was announced that a third film was in development. Directed by Troy Duffy, from a script he co-wrote with Sean Patrick Flanery and contributions from Norman Reedus. Flanery and Reedus will reprise their roles as Connor and Murphy MacNanus, respectively. Despite Duffy's time away from the director's chair, he stated that Flanery was instrumental in his return, and was heavily involved in completing the current draft of the screenplay. Shaun Redick, Yvette Yates Redick, Don Carmody, and Duffy were named as producers.[1] Principal photography was scheduled to commence in May 2022.[1] Following delays Duffy stepped down from his role as director by March 2024, in favor of writing a Boondock Saints novel series, and the studios were in search of another director. That month, it was announced that the third movie was intended to expand the films into a franchise, with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Todd Myers, and Peter D. Graves joining the production as additional producers.[2] The project will be a joint-venture production between Thunder Road Films, Dragonfly Films, Impossible Dream Entertainment, and The Exchange.[2][1]
In June, Reedus stated that the beginning of the movie will depict the escape from prison of Murphy and Connor MacManus.[3]
