Tether Gold (XAUt) is a stablecoin protocol backed by physical gold, introduced by TG Commodities Limited[1], a subsidiary of the USDT issuer Tether Limited[2] in January 2020. One ERC-20 token XAUT is equal to one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of gold.[3] The token aims to combine the advantages of blockchain technology with the stability and intrinsic value of gold. Tether Gold is issued as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain and as a TRC-20 token on the Tron blockchain.[4] Token holders are granted full ownership of the allocated gold corresponding to their tokens, which can be verified via a unique serial number assigned to the respective gold bar. This verification is accessible through Tether’s platform.[5][6][7] The founders of XAUt are the same as the founders of Tether Limited: Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins and Craig Sellars.[8]
Key Features
[edit]- Asset-backed: XAUt tokens are backed by allocated physical gold, audited and stored in Switzerland.
- Accessibility: Investors can acquire XAUt tokens without the need to physically handle or store gold.
- Security: Ownership and transfer are via blockchain technology.
- Redeemability: Holders with a minimum of one full token can redeem their tokens for physical gold or fiat currency.[9][10]
