Tabia (“Sanhetu” in Chinese) is a type of building soil made by mixing three or more materials. It refers to traditional mixed construction soils like rammed earth or compacted soil. Standard components include lime, clay, and fine sand, with the actual proportions depending on the sand content of the soil.[1] When compacted in layers, it has a particular strength and water resistance and is often used for building foundations or as a road subbase.
Recent research indicates that the mechanical properties of Tabia significantly improve after accelerated carbonation. With a 15% lime content and after 24 hours of carbonation, the compressive strength increased by more than 140%.[2] This improvement is due to the formation of calcium carbonate after the carbonation of lime, which fills the microstructure of Tabia, increasing its density and thus enhancing its mechanical performance.
