Dato Bijaya Indera Dato Paduka Hj Syed Unan Mashri Shahabuddin Syed Abdullah (born 5 May 1951) is a renowned Malaysian Civil Servant and Statesman who is currently serving as the Kedah Grand Chamberlain and was formerly the Kedah Secretary of State from 2004 to 2008 and the Chief Private Secretary to the late Sultan Abdul Halim from 1.1.1981 to 17.5. 2018.

In his role as the Grand Chamberlain he has played an important role during the proclamation and formal oath-taking ceremony of Sultan Sallehuddin and known for his significant contributions to the governance and ceremonial affairs of the State of Kedah and the Royal Household. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

Early Life and Education

Syed Unan Mashri was born in Alor Setar,Kedah on 5 May 1951 and he is the fourth of 11 siblings from the marriage of Syed Abdullah and Tengku Zainab.

Syed Unan Mashri received his primary education at SK Iskandar and continued his studies at secondary school at Sultan Abdul Hamid College,Alor Setar and then pursued his Bachelor's of Literature Degree at the University of Malaya

Career

Syed Unan has served as a government civil servant for 44 years.He began his career in public service with several roles in Kedah's civil service holding various positions such as the Penolong Pemungut Hasil Tanah of Baling (Assistant Land Revenue Collector) in 1974,then Assistant District Officer in 1977 before progressing to become the Assistant Secretary to the Kedah State Government in 1979.

On 21 July 1980,Syed Unan Mashri's career with the Kedah royal family began when he was appointed as the Acting Private Secretary within the royal household to the Sultan of Kedah before becoming his Principal Private Secretary on 1st January 1981.

He held the position of Chief Private Secretary to Sultan Abdul Halim for more than three decades, overseeing the Sultan’s daily affairs and serving as a key liaison between the royal household and the state government.

On 28 October 2004, Dato' Syed Unan Mashri was appointed as the Kedah Secretary of State which is a position he held until 17 May 2009. As the top-ranking civil servant in Kedah, he was responsible for the overall administration of the state, implementing government policies, and coordinating the state's bureaucracy.

Following his term as State Secretary, Dato' Syed Unan Mashri was appointed as the Pengelola Bijaya DiRaja (Kedah Grand Chamberlain)and Principal Private Secretary to the Sultan a role he assumed from 17 May 2009 until 17 May 2018. In this capacity, he played an instrumental role in organizing and overseeing royal ceremonies, particularly during the proclamation and formal oath-taking of Sultan Sallehuddin of Kedah.

After retirement, he was appointed as the Ketua Istiadat (Head of Palace Ceremonies) and Grand Chamberlain where he continues to oversee state and royal ceremonies.

Personal Life

Syed Unan Mashri married Datin Paduka Sharifah Nooraziah in 1979 who is the daughter of the late TYT Governor of Malacca Tun Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin and they had 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
