Draft:Swap (card game)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swap is a golf-card game and therefore similar to others of this family such as Yaniv[1], Cactus[2], Cambio[3], Rat-a-Tat Cat[4], or Cabo[5]. It is played with a standard 52 playing card deck. The origin is unclear.

Game Overview

[edit]

The objective of the game is to finish with the lowest points, with the best possible score being -2 points. This is achieved by holding two red kings.

Card Values

[edit]

The values of the cards are as follows:

"2": 2 points, "3": 3 points..., "10": 10 points, "J": 11 points, Q : 12, K black : 13, K red: -1, A: 1, Joker: 0,

Special Cards/ Abilities:

[edit]

black King : open swap ** Q/ J : blind swap *

10/9: look at opponents card 8/7: look at one of your own cards

open swap: the player checks one of his cards, and one of the opponents. After the player may decide if they want to switch those cards.

blind swap: The player must choose two cards. Again, one of his own and one of the opponent. However, with a blind swap, as the name suggest, they may not see the card values.

Game Setup

[edit]

Each player is dealt 4 cards face-down at the beginning of the game. In the center of the playing area, there is a stack of cards and one open card.

Game Mechanics

[edit]

Initial Phase:

Each player looks at one of their cards (this card is remembered). Matching:

If the card that a player saw matches the value of the open card, the player may place it in the center. Turn Structure: Each player's turn consists of three possible actions:

1) Take the Open card: A player can take the open card from the center, although this allows other players to aim for that card. 2) Take from the stack: A player can draw a card from the stack (without looking) and swap it with one of their four cards. 3) Use a card from the stack: If a player draws a card from the stack, they can use it (e.g., a "4" has no effect, but a black king allows for an open swap, which could potentially involve a red king).

Opponent Interaction: A player may also place an opponent's card in the center (between rounds). When this happens, the affected opponent receives one of the player's cards.

Mistakes: If a player makes a mistake (e.g., placing a card that does not match the value of the open card), they must add a card to their hand, which they may not look at immediately.

Swish-Swish: If a player feels confident with their cards, they may declare "swish-swish," allowing them to wiggle their cards left and right and thus ending the game. After "swish-swishing," the other players take one turn each, but the swished cards cannot be interacted with.

HARD Mode

[edit]

In HARD mode, additional rules apply to increase the challenge:

3s: Whenever a 3 is placed down, (unless it is placed by matching an open card of the discard pile), the player receives an additional unknown card added to their hand.

6s: A player may check the top 3 cards on the card stack, but the order of these cards may not be changed.
