Sutapa Sikdar is an Indian screenplay and dialogue writer and film producer, known for her works in the films Khamoshi: The Musical, Shabd, and Kahaani.[1] She also wrote story, screenplay and dialogues of television series Banegi Apni Baat. She turned film producer with Madaari and later produced Qarib Qarib Singlle.[2]
Career
[edit]Sutapa Sikdar is from Delhi and studied acting at the National School of Drama.[3] At NSD, she directed Peter Shaffer's Equus, with Irrfan Khan, her coursemate and future husband, in the lead. After graduating, she worked as assistant director in Govind Nihalani's telefilms. She wrote the screenplay for television series Banegi Apni Baat (1993), that ran for five years.[4]
She turned producer for a television show Janam Samjha Karo that she wrote for Star Plus, and Khan was supposed to direct. After shooting four episodes, the show was shelved owing to the success of another of the channel's series Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000).[5][6]
She later wrote dialogues for films, and produced films with her husband in the lead.[4]

Personal life
[edit]Sikdar was pursuing her degree from the National School of Drama, New Delhi, in 1985 where she met her future husband Irrfan Khan. They had a court marriage in 1995 and have two sons, Ayaan Khan and actor Babil Khan.[10][3] Irrfan died in 2020 of cancer.[11]
