Suresh K Alahari

Suresh K. Alahari is an Indian-American Cancer Biologist and Molecular Biologist. He is a fellow of the American Association of Advancement of Sciences[1], and a fellow of the American Society of Cell Biology[2]. He is the Fred Brazda professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center (LSUSHC) School of Medicine[3], and a member of Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium[4]. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina[5], and a research fellow at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India[6].

Biography

Dr. Alahari obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Science in Human Genetics from Andhra University, India[7] in 1983 and 1986 respectively. His Ph.D. in Molecular Biology was awarded by Drexel University, Philadelphia[8] in the year 1994. During his Ph.D, he discovered a protein, prp4, plays an important role in pre-mRNA splicing. From 1994 to 1998, Dr. Alahari did a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since 1998, he has been a faculty member at the University of North Carolina[9]. During his tenure at the University of North Carolina, he discovered a novel protein that he termed, Nischarin, and this name was derived from Sanskrit[10]. Dr. Alahari has published several papers describing the function of Nischarin, and showed that Nischarin blocks cell migration, cell invasion and inhibits breast cancer growth and metastasis[11]. He joined the faculty LSUSHC, New Orleans in 2004, and rose up to the rank of full professor[12]. Currently he is a full tenured and endowed professor of Biochemistry. In addition he availed visiting professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia[13] and Rockefeller University, New York[14].

Dr. Alahari is on editorial boards of several journals including Molecular Cancer[15], Oncogene[16], Journal of Biological Chemistry[17], NonCoding RNA[18], Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology[19], Frontiers in Genetics[20], International Journal of Human Genetics[21]. He has served on several grant study sections including NIH[22], DOD[23], AHA[24] and multiple international funding agencies. Dr. Alahari has given more than 160 seminars across the globe. He published more than 150 papers and abstracts. Dr. Alahari published several seminal papers on Nischarin[25], microRNAs[26] and small molecule drugs[27].
