Struttin' My Stuff is the sixth album by musician Elvin Bishop, and the third released on Capricorn Records, in 1975. It is Bishop's highest charting album on the Billboard 200 to date, reaching a peak position of #18 on January 24, 1976 and spending a total of 34 weeks on that chart.[1]

The track "Fooled Around and Fell in Love", which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100[1], was sung by a vocalist named Mickey Thomas who was in Bishop's backing band at the time. Although Bishop had initially rehearsed the track using his own voice, he was dissatisfied with the outcome and stated: "That's not buttering my biscuit, my vocal on this. Why don't we give Mickey a shot at this?"[2] Thomas's recording ended up being the final product and earned him more lead vocal performances on Bishop's next album, Hometown Boy Makes Good! The song was featured in the 2014 Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy nearly four decades later.[3]

Both the tracks "Holler and Shout" and "Have a Good Time" first appeared on Elvin Bishop's album Rock My Soul in 1972, then as The Elvin Bishop Band.[4]

The album helped serve as a launchpad for eventual Jefferson Starship/Starship band members Mickey Thomas and Donny Baldwin, whose work with Bishop would later help them to join said groups.[5]

Critical reception

[edit]

American rock critic Robert Christgau had a positive view of the album and rated it a B+. In his review, he stated that: "Usually, when someone tells you an album ain't nuthin' but good old rock and roll, that means it ain't nuthin'. This is the exception. After singing (and playing) the blues for ten years, Elvin makes like he was born to boogie. Completing his Marin-to-Macon switch by recording at Criteria in Miami instead of the Record Plant in Sausalito, he here provides Capricorn with enough hooks to keep the Brothers gone fishin for the next decade. All very debrained, of course, but the first side never stops, and if the title cut isn't the label's first top-ten song since 'Ramblin' Man,' either my name ain't Juke Box Johnny or 'Fooled Around and Fell in Love' got there first."[6]
