History

The St. Mary's Building, located at 830 St. Germain Street West, has a rich history dating back to 1920. That year, St. Mary's parish faced a significant setback when their church burned down. Although the parish quickly set out to rebuild, financial constraints meant that after five years, they could only afford to construct a basement. However, the parish owned a valuable piece of property on St. Germain Street, which was noted for its popularity in a 1925 St. Cloud newspaper article.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception had already ventured into the real estate market, erecting a two-story downtown office building at 800 West St. Germain, completed in June 1925 and soon leased to Northern States Power. Following this example, St. Mary's parish financed a much larger building on a lot previously used as a playground for the parish school.

To design the building, St. Mary's turned to architects Leo Schaer and Narn Fiser, who had designed the new St. Mary's Church. The architectural style of the building, known as Collegiate Gothic, makes excellent use of terracotta in the trim, sills, and atop the crenelated parapet wall. The entrance features its original inscription of the words "St. Mary's Building" set in terracotta above the entry.

Upon completion, the St. Cloud Journal Press reported the building had six stores on St. Germain Street, commanding the highest rentals, and elegant suites of offices on the second and third floors, most of which were leased before construction was complete. The structure was hailed as the most elaborate of its type in the city.^[1]
