Shiladitya Chetia (1 March 1980 – 18 June 2024) was a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 2009 batch who served in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Chetia was found dead on 18 June 2024 in Guwahati reportedly due to suicide.
Early life and Education
[edit]Chetia was born in 1980 in Assam, India. He pursued his early education in Assam and later graduated with a degree in Political Science.[citation needed]
Career
[edit]Chetia joined the Indian Police Service in 2009, he served in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre as Superintendent of Police in Nalbari district, Tinsukia district, Sonitpur district, Kokrajhar district and Barpeta district.[2][3]
He was later promoted to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Assam Police. Chetia had also served as commandant of the 4th Assam Police Battalion.[4]
In 2024, he was serving as the Secretary Home and Political to Assam Government.[5][6][7]
Contributions and Achievements
[edit]Chetia was involved in high-profile cases and operations that contributed to reducing crime rates in Tinsukia, Nalbari, Kokrajhar, and Barpeta districts of Assam.[8]
Personal Life
[edit]Chetia married Agamoni Borbaruah on 12 May 2013, they had no children.[9][10]
His wife died due to carcinoma (malignant brain tumor) on 18 June 2024 in Guwahati.[11][12][13]
Death
[edit]On 18 June 2024, Chetia was found dead at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati, Assam.[14][15][16] Preliminary reports indicated that he died by suicide soon after hearing about his wife's death (due to cancer) in the hospital.[17][18][19]
Chetia reportedly shot himself using his service revolver.[20][21][22] He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.[23]
Legacy
[edit]Chetia's death sparked discussions about weather it was preventable and highlighted the mental health challenges faced by law enforcement officers.[24][25][26]
