Shūichi Asō in the uniform of PK Academy

Shūichi Asō (麻生周一, Asō Shūichi, Iruma, 26 December 1985) is a Japanese mangaka, best known for his work "Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan".

Career

He was born in the city Iruma In the prefecture Saitama. At around the age of 20, Asō decided to become a mangaka, after leading a life in which, apart from working twice a week, he was mostly at home.

Early in his career, Asō mainly wanted to create stories that would touch people. He even won an award for his story once, but he never submitted a manuscript to a publisher.

Asō submitted his work for the Tezuka Award, but at the last minute he decided to create a new story, "勇者パーティー現る" (Yuusha Party Arawaru), and that story became the runner-up for the Akatsuka Award. This was a rare achievement for a newcomer. "勇者パーティー現る" was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump (Shueisha) in 2006, and that was Asō's debut as a mangaka.

After a number of one-shots, Asō published his first series, "ぼくのわたしの勇者学" (Boku no Watashi no Yuusha Gaku/Our Hero Studies), in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2007 to 2008. Getting a series within a year of his debut is a rare achievement.

After "ぼくのわたしの勇者学", Asō tried to make a detective serie, but stopped because it was too similar to the television series "33分探偵" (33-pun Tantei).

In 2010, Asō started a new series, "新世紀アイドル伝説彼方セブンチェンジ" (Shinseiki Idol Densetsu Kanata Seven Change), but it was discontinued after 13 weeks.

Asō has always thought it would be easier to create stories if main characters could do everything. Therefore, in 2010 he published a one-shot in Weekly Shōnen Jump,"斉木楠雄のΨ難"(Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-Nan/The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.), in which the main character is a psychic (psychic/Esper). This story became a series in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2011, and it became a huge success. It even became an anime and a live-action film. The manga ran until July 2018 and was never officially translated.

Personal

Asō is married to Misuzu Furukawa (singer of でんぱ組.inc) and they have one son together who was born on 14 July 2021. Asō also has a dog.

Asō is a fan of the music game "BEMANI Series" (by Konami Digital Entertainment) and the artist Ryu☆. He even created an alternative cover for the album "Ryu☆BEST-MOONLiGHT-".

Asō uses the name Shūichi Asō as a pseudonym. His real name is not known.
