Seyyed Hossein Safai (born 1933 in Qazvin) is an esteemed Iranian jurist, theologian, author, translator, and university professor. He is a permanent member of the Academy of Sciences and serves as the head of its law department. Safai has also previously held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Tehran[1][2]. Currently, he is the editor-in-chief of the specialized quarterly journal, Research and Development in Comparative Law.[3] Safai was recognized as a distinguished laureate of Iran’s Third Allameh Tabatabaei Scientific Award by the National Elite Foundation in 2013, and in 2023, he received Iran's inaugural "Excellence in Knowledge Medal," an honor awarded to 11 prominent scientific figures nationwide.[4]
Bio
[edit]Safai moved to Tehran, where he first graduated from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Tehran in 1953. He then earned a top-ranked law degree from the Faculty of Law and Political Science and later pursued his doctorate in France under René David, earning a Doctorat d'État in Private Law from the Sorbonne. His thesis won the prestigious Louis Miau Prize and was published by Dalloz, with a foreword by David. Returning to Iran, Safai joined the University of Tehran’s law faculty in 1965, became a full professor in 1973, and later served as both Deputy Dean and Dean. He also directed the Institute of Comparative Law and is currently an emeritus professor at Tehran University, as well as a part-time professor at the Islamic Azad University.[5]
