Sergei Belo

Sergei Belo [1] (born January 4, 1970) is a former Russian and Israeli professional ice hockey player and current coach. Known for his longstanding contributions to ice hockey in Israel, he played for multiple Israeli clubs and represented the Israel men's national ice hockey team in international competitions. Since 2023, he has been the head coach of the "Raanana Sharks" in the OIHL Pro League.

Early Life and Youth Career

Sergei Belo was born in Leningrad, USSR (now Saint Petersburg, Russia). At the age of seven, he began playing hockey with the SKA Leningrad club, a team affiliated with the Soviet Army, located on Fontanka Street. Initially positioned as a goaltender under the guidance of coach Eugene Tabolkin, he later switched to playing as a left forward to better meet the needs of the team. He remained in this position until 1988, dedicating his early career to SKA Leningrad.

During his youth career, Belo participated in various local and national tournaments, representing SKA Leningrad in:

The 8th Championship of Leningrad for Juniors USSR Junior Championship The USSR Armed Forces Championship, where he won a bronze medal (1984) The All-Union Junior Games, where he placed fourth (1986) The USSR Nations Tournament (1988) By 1988, Belo had joined SKA Leningrad's main professional team and also played for the club's farm team, SKA-2.

Career in Israel

In 1990, Belo immigrated to Israel, where he joined the Netanya ice hockey team, helping them secure the national championship title. Over the following years, he competed for various Israeli teams, including Netanya, Bat-Yam, Lod, Haifa, Maalot, and Metula, and won 10 national championships across his career.

Belo began playing in the Israeli Championship in 1995 and joined the Israeli national team in 1996. In 1998, he was named team captain. From 1997 to 2010, he represented Israel in 13 Ice Hockey World Championships, achieving several honors:

He also participated in the I and II Jewish World Championships, where he earned silver and bronze medals. Belo concluded his national team career in 2010.

Coaching Career and Return to Professional Play

In 1999, Belo obtained a coaching certification from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Prague, Czech Republic. He went on to coach the Israeli national team, leading them to a gold medal at the 2011 Ice Hockey World Championship in South Africa.

In 2021, at the age of 51, Belo made a return to professional play, joining the Kfar Saba team in the OIHL and helping them win first place in the 2020–2021 season. In the following season (2021–2022), he served as part of the Head coaching staff for HC Netanya in the Israeli Elite Hockey League (IEHL[2]), contributing to another first-place finish.

Since 2023, Belo has served as the head coach of the Raanana Sharks[3] in the OIHL Pro League, where he continues to support the growth of ice hockey in Israel.
