Zane Steckler (born December 22, 2000), known professionally as Sematary (and sometimes boes by Sematary Grave Man), is an American rapper and producer from Northern California. He is a founding member of the rap collective Haunted Mound.Sematary began posting music to SoundCloud in 2019. He first gained notoriety on the platform through his Grave House mixtape with collaborator Ghost Mountain, as the song "Nevada" garnered over one million streams across multiple platforms before its removal. In 2021, Sematary released the mixtape Rainbow Bridge 3 to critical acclaim, with music critic Anthony Fantano rating the album 8/10 on his site The Needle Drop. Their song Haunted Mound Reapers released on 2022 also reached 3 million views in 2023.
Sematary's first live performance took place on November 18, 2021 in San Francisco, California, supported by Cold Hart, Drippin' So Pretty and Yawns.
In 2022, he announced a debut world tour in support of the recently released Butcher House album, spanning twenty six dates across eleven countries.
He entered the lineup for Lyrical Lemonade's 3-day Summer Smash 2023 and is scheduled as a supporting artist on Gray Day's upcoming 42-date 2023 US tour with $uicideBoy$, Ghostemane, Freddie Dredd and Ramirez. On August 21, 2023, Sematary announced their second EP, King of the Graveyard, which would be released in September. He also announced a collaboration with drill rapper Chief Keef for the FTP records album.
While their early mixtapes explore black metal samples chopped, screwed or tuned to exaggerated trap drums, their later albums, Screaming Forest and Butcher House, feature more synths reminiscent of the Chicago drill scene of the early 2010s, as well as more samples from experimental artists, such as Shlohmo.
Early Life
[edit]Sematary was born on December 22, 2000, in, as the artist states, "the mountains of Northern California." He grew up listening to rappers such as Chief Keef, Yung Lean and Black Kray, as well as bands related to the depressive black metal genre/scene such as Lifelover, Thy Light and Silencer. While in school, he met frequent Haunted Mound collaborator and co-founder Ghost Mountain who would later leave the group to focus on his personal life and studies, trying to leave his old career behind and have a new start. They graduated from school in 2019.
