Started in 1976–77, sponsored by Mackinlay old Scotch whiskey a panel of judges selected a winner and runner-up.
A new awards setup replaced it in 1984–85, sponsored by Scottish Brewers, it was split into two separate categories, a manager's award and a player's award.[2]
