Sarmals,also known as sadmal,who are Pahari(living in hills) Dogra Rajputs hailing from Suryavanshi lineage of Kshatriya class,primarily inhabited the lower hills of Jammu under dogra kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir.They are known as the descendants of Thakkuras mentioned in Rajatarangini.[1] They were feudal lords and warriors experienced in hill warfare.They served as powerful chiefs under various kings of Dogra dynasty as well as under several kashmiri kings.[citation needed] They are primarily Suryavanshi(descendants of lord rama).Their Gotra is Bhardwaj.[2] Etymologically they originated from Souram hills of Samba,a district in Jammu division of J and K from where they got their surname.[citation needed] Currently they are concentrated in Samba district and scattered across Jammu,Kathua,Doda,Punjab and Himachal pradesh.[citation needed]
Their main weapons were axe and katar(dagger)
