Career
[edit]Sarah Jane Borg
Sarah has been a professional Artist for over 40 years.
She was born in 1950 in Newton Ferrers, South Devon, UK.
She comes from a farming background in South Hampshire, England.
This is her journey of becoming an Artist.
Sarah has learned to paint by following the artists she most admired and embraced their techniques.
She is passionate about beautiful art and believes that no matter how many artists there are, they all bring a unique "hand" to the art world.
Between 1970 and 1971, Sarah was a Nanny to Edwina, Ashley and India Hicks, the grandchildren of Lord Mountbatten. David Hicks was an Interior Decorator and Artist. Art was in their family. Lady Pamela Hicks greatly encouraged Sarah to paint. Sarah's eyes were opened to a more sophisticated world - Classiebawn Castle, the Bahamas, Lyford Cay, Eleuthera Island, Museums and original art.
In the 1970s, Sarah was making bespoke handmade toys and distributed them to small boutiques such as Tridias Dartington Hall and House of Fraser. At this time she was mostly painting with watercolours.
In 1978, she went to New York to work as a Social Secretary to Mrs. Heinz. This is where she first encountered the original paintings of Renoirs, Mogdigliani and others, and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This was an extroardinary inspiration and motivation to challenge herself to progress further in her art.
In 1979, Sarah met her first husband and Captain Paul Watson, the co-founders of Greenpeace, and her interest in saving the whales was sparked. Captain Watson then created 'The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society' (1977) and recently his own foundation 'The Capt Paul Watson Foundation' (2022).
In 1980, she returned to the UK, where she was offered her first exhibition. By 1988, she was a published artist by three art publishing companies (Solomon Whitehead, Polytint and Manuscript) and exhibiting her work regularly. The funds raised from her art allowed her to set up the 'Sea Shepherd UK' (1985), to support Captain Watson's campaign to stop the horrific pilot whale slaughter in the Danish Faroe Islands.
At this point, Sarah was mostly known for her beach, family, dog and horse paintings.
She has been represented by:
The Barbican Gallery, Plymouth (her 1st sell out show)
AB Gallery, Salcombe
Adam Arnold Brown, Devon
The Pantiles (exhibition), Royal Tunbridge Wells
The Lion House Gallery, Lavenham (Mortonhampstead exhibition)
Wadebridge Gallery, Cornwall
St. James Park railings, London
United States exhibitions
Waterhouse Gallery, Solvagn California (now Montecito)
In 1987, Sarah moved to Sweden. She continued exhibiting her work there for the next 30 years via art societies such as ABB, Elajo, OKG Oskarshamn/Kalmar county Nuclear power plant (where she was voted Artist of the Year), Lilligaleriet, Stats Hotel Oskarsham and Hotel Drottning Kristina in Stockholm centre (commissioned paintings still displayed in the entrance and the lobby)
She was commissioned for large canvasses by the Swedish Herrgård Country House in Värmland and Ulf Dinklespiel, the Swedish representative and President of the EU.
At this point, Sarah decided to broader her scope and ventured into work with interior designers Carin and Karl at Garbo Interiors, in Stockholm, for 12 years as an in-house Artist. She was restoring painted antique furniture, hand painted floor mats in the 17th century Swedish style (which she also sold in Nordic style in Chelsea ,London and exhibited at Olympia and Stockholm's Massen).
She also created two Nordic style fabric collections (linen and silk) in London.
In 2016, Sarah designed and painted a card collection (44 cards) that were exhibited at the Progressive Live trade fair in London, in the newbie artist section, where she received the most sales that year.
In 2017, Sarah entered a new endeavour. She was commissioned by the Swedish author Marianne Von Kantzow Ridderstad to illustrate her children's book "Puss and Mugg". A delightful book about adventures of two mice. This became a new passion for Sarah as she loved to interpret words of others into pictures and she found it fascinating and challenging. She also illustrated a personal family book for the above author called "AB Familjen" ("The Corporate Family").
In 2018, Sarah and her family moved to the South of France.
She continued to exhibit her work at
The British Franco week, St Foy La Grande
Shared exhibition in The Office de Tourism Riberac
In 2019, she had a solo exhibition, Les Jardins Du Coq
Shared exhibition, St. Aulaye
In 2020, Sarah was invited to participate in a Special exhibition in Bergerac .
In 2021, Sarah collaborated with Capt Paul Watson and illustrated his children's book "We are the Ocean", published by Groundswell Books, Tennessee, USA. Due to an international demand, this book has been translated into German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farzi and Slovenian.
In 2023, Sarah was commissioned to 'time lapse' paint L'ivresse des Anges (Intoxicated Angels) to newly composed music (played by Charente Brass Band), to tell the story of Cognac making in the Charente region of France.
In 2024, Sarah entered the summer exhibition with the Royal Portrait Society, with her son's portrait and it was selected.
