Samu/elle Striewski is a German bi+ activist, drag performer, philosophy and queer studies scholar. They are currently based in Berlin and became the first non-binary person awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for Germany to continue their studies in political theory and intellectual history at the University of Oxford (starting in Michaelmas term 2024).[1][2]

Their research focus lies in intersection of queer studies and political philosophy (particularly in the tradition of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory and French post-structuralist thought).[3] They co-founded a graduate research colloquium on this area hosted by Columbia University[4] and currently work as a research assistant for critical theorist Rahel Jaeggi at the Centre for Social Critique in Berlin.[5][6]

Early life and education

[edit]

Samu/elle Striewski went to German high school in Wuppertal and graduated with the best Abitur "ever" achieved at their school (894 of 900 points).[7]

At school, they engaged among others as representative in the Wuppertal Youth Council[8][9] and as the school's student body president.[10] In the latter position, Striewski had several public appearances; among others, they delivered a speech about the Frech-German relationship in front of members of the European Parliament, Ministry of Education, and Institut Français,[11] they co-organized a project against racism and for democratic courage (for whom the famous sculptor and artist Tony Cragg was won as a sponsor),[12][13] they co-moderated a discussion with the Wuppertal candidates for the 2017 election of the German Bundestag,[14] and their graduation speech was printed in the regional daily newspaper, Westdeutsche Zeitung.[15] Striewski also did research in astronomy which resulted in a first paper publication in a journal on spectroscopy[16] and they participated succesfully in a philosophical essay contest.[17] For their academic and social engagement, they were awarded the "Cronenberger Unternehmerpreis" (Cronenberg Entrepeneur Award) in 2017.[18]

After a gap year,[7] Samu/elle Striewski started studying mathematics, comparative literature, and philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin. They did an Erasmus exchange in Paris, where they studied at the Sorbonne and Université Paris VIII, and another research stay in New York City, where they worked with postcolonial scholar Gayatri C. Spivak, Frankfurt School philosopher Axel Honneth, and with queer and trans* theorist Jack Halberstam at Columbia University.[19][20]

Representative for the members of the Studienstiftung for New York, Yale and Princeton[21]

Striewski is currently back in Berlin to finish their master in philosophy with a "thesis on the socio-economic, political, and normative grounds for queer recognition"[22] (supervised by Honneth and Robin Celikates). At the same time, they are pursuing a master in gender studies at the Centre d’études féminines et d’études de genre at Paris VIII (founded in 1974 by feminist writer Hélène Cixous as the first institut of its kind in Europe). In October 2024, they are going to continue their studies in Oxford, fully funded by the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

They have published and presented research on topics such as (nonbinary and bisexual) politics, planetary ecofeminism, queer solidarity and recognition, and drag.
