Salar Rajabnik, (born 28 August) professionally known as Darker Lighter, is an Iranian-American musician, songwriter and producer based in Los Angeles, California.
Early Life and Background
[edit]Salar Rajabnik was born in Atlanta, Georgia and spent his formative years between Tehran, Iran and Kansas City.
Musical Development and Influences
[edit]Rajabnik is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, songwriter & producer. His early experimentation with music led to a distinctive sound that draws from post-punk, shoegaze, and indie rock traditions. His music also reflects themes of resistance, artistic integrity, and hope, shaped by his bicultural experiences.
Darker Lighter
[edit]Under the moniker Darker Lighter, Rajabnik creates music that blends cross-genre soundscapes with introspective lyrics. The project channels influences from post-punk, shoegaze, power pop and indie rock, while maintaining a deeply personal and distinct voice. Darker Lighter's sound has drawn comparisons to artists like Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and The Cure.
Collaborations and Studio Work
[edit]Having toured extensively as a musician with various indie bands, Rajabnik has also appeared live or as a band member with Pete Yorn, Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters, Minnie Driver, Blind Melon, Farewell Flight, Bill Lloyd and more.
Rajabnik has also worked closely with major acts like Foo Fighters, Kim Gordon, Jason Falkner of Beck, Queens of the Stone Age and more.[1] His work as a guitar technician and musical associate for these artists gave him significant insight into the professional music industry while further honing his craft.
In 2017, Rajabnik released a solo album entitled “Black & White World”.[2]
Upcoming Darker Lighter Album
[edit]Rajabnik is set to release his long-anticipated album under creative moniker Darker Lighter, which was recorded at Foo Fighters' Studio 606 under the guidance of renowned producer Robert Adam Stevenson.[3] The album draws upon his years of musical exploration and experiences, and is expected to showcase his signature blend of influences upon its release in March of 2025. The first single, “Hanging On” was selected for feature on Apple Music’s New In Rock and New In Alternative playlists. Darker Lighter has already been praised by Chris Shiflett & Pat Smear of Foo Fighters, Pete Yorn and Kim Gordon.[4]
Personal Life
[edit]Rajabnik is an avid football (soccer) aficionado & plays regularly. He supports Los Angeles Football Club, Esteghlal FC, and Team Melli (The Iran National Football Team) & frequently attends LAFC games.
