- Comment: The draft is written entirely from the perspective of the movement itself, telling the reader what the adherents say about themselves, sourced to their own publications – but that is not what Wikipedia is for. To show notability and to make the text more encyclopedic, it has to be based on what other people have said about the movement, as published by reliable and independent secondary sources. bonadea contributions talk 14:05, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Saint-savian nationalism is the way of life of Orthodox Serbs in the Church of Christ.[1] A way of life that represents a combination of Serbian nationalism and Orthodox Theodulia.[2][3] All clericalism is alien to it[4]
Saint-savian nationalism is not a political ideology.[5]
This term originated in the 1930s in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Its ideologues are Orthodox Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović and Justin Popović.
Saint-savian nationalists stand for "love of God", "chivalry", "congregation" and for the establishment of a Serbian Orthodox state in the area from "Kupa to Vardar and from the Danube to the Adriatic Sea". Adherents of this ideology reject Western culture, democracy, liberalism, republican values and ecumenical dialogue.[citation needed]
The foundations of the Saint-savian nationalism
[edit]In his lecture "Nationalism of Saint Sava" in 1935, Nikolaj Velimirović stated six principles of Saint-savian nationalism:
"This Saint-savian nationalism includes the national church, national dynasty, national state, national education, national culture and national defense. The basis and center of Saint-savian nationalism is the national church."[6]
He also stated that the three greatest values of the Serbian people are:
God, who is above everything and everyone, incomparable to anyone, necessary for every living being. King of kings and Lord of lords.
King, lord of the earthly kingdom by the prayer of God. First by the grace of God and then by the will of the people. We must all respect the king.
Home, main and elementary school, which prepares people for citizens of both the earthly and heavenly kingdoms. We must all protect the home, the Serbian home.
"And the healthy soul of our people knew and knows that there is no life, order or happiness without God, without a home and without a king."
Without God - not even across the threshold.
Without the King - nothing is good.
Without a home - the fate of Sodom."[7]
Anti-fascism/Anti-Nazism & Anti-Catholicism
[edit]The co-ideologue of Saint-savian nationalism and Saintsavaism, Saint Justin Popovic, expressed strong anti-fascist views in his sermons, both before and after the end of the Second World War. The best example is his speech "On the struggle of the Saint-savian movement then and now" during the Concordat crisis:
“ | Only guided and led by Saint-savian spirit, the Serbs recently won a victory over the Concordat crisis. By defeating this, the Serbs defeated the main enemy of their soul: the black international. By defeating the black international, they showed that they have the spiritual forces of Saint Sava to be able to defeat the other two internationals: red - communist, and yellow - capitalist-fascist. Because, don't be fooled: papism is the father of fascism and communism and all organizations and movements that want to order and make humanity happy through violent or mechanical means.[8] | ” |
In his festive sermon at the Presentation of the Holy Virgin Mary in 1966 in the Ćelije Monastery, Saint Justin ranked Adolf Hitler among the greatest enemies of the Orthodox Church and Orthodoxy:
“ | Born of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Lord founded the Church so that people can be saved in it from every evil, from every sin, from every death, from every devil. And she stands steadfast, she is indestructible, the Holy Church is indestructible; indestructible by any Diocletians, Tamerlanes, Hitlers, Neros and all the then and present persecutors of the Church of Christ in this world. Behold, she is stronger, stronger than all of them, the Wonderful Lord Christ, the Conqueror of death, the Conqueror of sin, the Conqueror of hell, the Conqueror of Satan and all his devils. Yes![9] | ” |
At a sermon in Valjevo on September 26, 1937, Nikolaj Velimirović compared the Catholic Church to the Fascists:
“ | ...Let us swear that we will work against everything that serves the international fascist church and that we will be true to everything that we have said. Let us swear not by raising our hands, that is the fascist salute, not with a fist, that is the Spanish salute, but like this: Three fingers up Serbs! All Valjevci, Župljani, Mountaineers, all relatives of these fallen heroes, descendants of Saint Sava, say: "As we said, God helped us!" helped!/ Amen! God's blessing be with you![10] | ” |
Patriarch Gavrilo Dožić blessed the anti-fascist military coup on March 27, 1941:
“ | In front of our nation in these days, destiny once again posed the question of who will be favored by the empire. This morning, at dawn, that question was answered. We accepted the Kingdom of Heaven, that is, the kingdom of God's truth and justice, national harmony and freedom... If it is to live, let us live in holiness and freedom, if it is to die, let us die for holiness and freedom like many millions of our celebrated ancestors. | ” |
