Runna is a subscription-based mobile application designed to provide personalized running coaching and training plans with the goal to help users improve their running performance, achieve specific running goals, and reduce their risk of injury.
The application uses a freemium model where users can access some of its beginner plans for free and also record their runs and sync them to Strava. Other training plans require a paid subscription.
Overview and features
[edit]The Runna app was developed to make professional running coaching accessible to a wider audience, leveraging technology to provide personalized training plans and coaching advice.
Its training plans are tailored to the user's running goals, current fitness level, and available training time.
The app uses audio cues to provide live coaching to the user during workouts and can also sync with their Strava account..[1]
It records data for outdoor and treadmill running workouts[2], enabling users to assess their performance, and also features optional strength and mobility training plans and advice on running technique, nutrition, and injury management.
Compatible devices
[edit]The application runs on Android and iOS and is available for download via Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
It integrates with Strava and wearable devices from the following manufacturers: Apple, Garmin, COROS, Fitbit, and Suunto.
History
[edit]Runna was founded by Dom Maskell and Ben Parker in 2021[3] to make high-quality running coaching more accessible[4] and help runners of all fitness and experience levels train effectively and improve their performance.
Runna initially raised £687,000 in seed funding in late 2021 on the group investment platform Crowdcube. This was followed by a second funding round led by Eka Ventures’ founding partner, Jon Coker, which helped raise £1.9m in 2022, used for the application’s expansion in the UK and US markets in 2023.[5][6]
A third funding round, led by JamJar, with participation from Eka Ventures, Venrex and Creator Ventures, as well as British Olympics athletes Steph Davis, Beth Potter, Greg O’Shea and Alex Yee raised £5m in late 2023.[7] This brings Runna’s total funding to £7,6m (nearly $10m).
Steph Davis and Beth Potter are currently a part of Runna’s coaching team.
Some of Runna’s official partners are Hoka One One[8], the McCourt Foundation[9], and Motiv[10]
