Room for Discussion (RfD) is a discussion platform of the University of Amsterdam. Two students from different disciplines usually interview well-known academics, politicians, economists and other guests for an hour about socially relevant themes. The interviews are held on the Roeterseiland campus, where students, employees and journalists can visit them and are given the opportunity to ask questions themselves. A live stream of the discussions is also available, which is later posted on YouTube.
Room for Discussion was founded in 2008 by students at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of the University of Amsterdam. After the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, they stated that the university needed a platform that would facilitate discussions about the causes of the financial crisis and bridge the gap between academia and the real world.[3] In addition, the aim was to provide a platform for the most diverse and divergent opinions. Over the years, the platform expanded to other disciplines and subjects, including history, politics, philosophy and journalism. Over the years, the organization has welcomed a very wide range of national and international guests, including Christine Lagarde, Thomas Piketty, Mario Draghi, Joris Luyendijk, Geert Mak, Frans Timmermans, Klaas Knot, Peter Singer and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
Since its inception, the discussion platform has been affiliated with the FEB study association, SEFA, as a committee. The platform usually consists of about ten to twenty students and partially changes composition twice a year.
