Revenue Divisional Offices are administrative units of the Government of Tamil Nadu responsible for looking after the district revenue functions. Each of these offices is headed by a Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO)[1], conventionally an individual promoted from the position of Tehsildar, or Sub-Collectors selected from among the Indian Administrative Service Officers. Each district is divided into sub-divisions where the Revenue Divisional Officer, the District Collector or the Sub-Collector heads. His responsibilities comprise the Revenue Administration, maintenance of Law and Order, Land Administration, and Revenue Village Administration at the divisional level. There are close to 100 RDOs within the State.[2]
Functions of a Revenue Divisional Officer
[edit]- Certificates are issued at the level of District Development Officer (or) Sub-Collector on the recommendations of the Village Administrative Officer, Revenue Inspector and Tehsildar for certain certificates requiring signatures of officers above the level of Tehsildar.
- District Development Officers (or) Sub-Collectors are appointed to inquire into the law and order problems in the district due to any incident at the revenue division level.
- All the work as directed by the District Collector is done through this office and the revenue offices under this office.
- Any other function(s) that the Government of Tamil Nadu may assign from time-to-time, by an Administrative Order published by the Competent Authority in the Official Gazette.[3]
