Career in Dragon Fruit Farming

Ramesh Reddy began dragon fruit farming in 2018 on his land in Ranjole village of Sangareddy district. He faced initial challenges but saw an opportunity in introducing a high-value, less-common crop to the region. Through his efforts, he established one of the most prominent dragon fruit farms in Telangana, aiming to make dragon fruit cultivation more sustainable and profitable.

Innovations

Ramesh Reddy is particularly noted for his use of LED lighting on his farm to extend the growing season for dragon fruit. To meet the plant’s light needs during low-sunlight months, he installed LED bulbs around each plant, creating artificial daylight conditions. This allows him to harvest dragon fruit even during the off-season, generating around four tonnes of yield per acre when natural sunlight is scarce. His innovative use of LED lighting has helped meet off-season demand in the market, significantly boosting profitability.[1]

Media Recognition

Reddy’s contributions to dragon fruit farming have been highlighted by major media outlets like Telangana Today and HortiDaily, which documented his work on LED lighting innovations and dragon fruit farming practices in India. These publications have recognized Reddy’s role in promoting dragon fruit cultivation and inspiring other farmers in the region to adopt similar practices.[2]

Community Impact

In addition to his personal farming endeavors, Reddy has supported local farmers through the formation of the Telangana State Dragon Fruit Farmers Association. This organization offers training, guidance, and resources to farmers interested in growing dragon fruit. Reddy has also distributed high-quality saplings to help other farmers diversify their crops and increase their profitability.
