Raja Isteri Girls' High School (Malay: Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, abbrev: STPRI)[2] is the first girls' government secondary school located in Brunei, established in 1930, which has continually evolved to provide education for women. Over the decades, it has expanded its facilities, introduced various academic programs, and achieved notable academic success, such as a 53% improvement in learning performance reported in 2018.
Etymology
[edit]The late Pengiran Anak Damit (1924–1979), the Queen consort of Brunei and the late wife of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III,[3] who had been known as Paduka Seri Baginda Raja Isteri,[4] is honoured by the school's name.[5] She brought attention to problems that the nation's citizens and the community faced during her time as Queen consort. Her public persona was well seen by the masses, particularly the female demographic, given that she accompanied her spouse on multiple state trips in her capacity as a public servant.[4]
History
[edit]Founded in 1930 with 24 students, the educational institution was the first girls school. Construction of a new school began in 1955, and was completed in 1957.[6][7] Following this, the school changed its name to Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan (Girls High School) in January 1957, it had one building block, presently known as Block A, with five classrooms and 99 pupils. The school was officially opened on 1 January 1958, and its name was changed to Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (Raja Isteri Girls High School).[8][5][9] The Kajang Girls' Hostel was transformed into classrooms at STPRI in that same year.[10]
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, located in Brunei Town; the Anthony Abell College located in Seria, with preparatory annexes at Kuala Belait and Tutong; and the STPRI, located in Brunei Town, were the three Government English-medium schools as of 1967.[2] STPRI's current development continues, as in 1970, work on a new structure containing a dining hall, an auditorium, and a library was initiated. When fourth form was created in 1978, STPRI students were the first to take the GCE 'O' Level examination prior to being admitted as Form students.[5]
In 2002, the sixth form was introduced. With 132 teachers on staff as of 7 March 2005, SPTRI employs teachers from Malaysia, the Philippines, India, New Zealand, Canada, and England in addition to 106 local teachers.[5] During the visit of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah that same year, he paid a detailed inspection of the work being done at STPRI. One of the STPRI students was exhibiting symptoms of hysteria, which the Sultan saw firsthand.[11]
On 29 June 2007, STPRI commemorated its 50th anniversary, celebrating its legacy of empowering successful women. Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha and Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar joined the event, which included a visit to schools, including Raja Isteri's former classroom, a picture session, and the royal family's inauguration of the STPRI Golden Jubilee Monument and Gallery.[9][12] Later on 8 July, the golden jubilee reunion of STPRI was held at the International Convention Centre. In addition to a carnival called "Down the Memory Lane of STPRI 1957-1990," which included performances and a film presentation by current and previous students.[13][14]
There are 1,122 students enrolled in Years 7 through 11 at the school as of January 2015, with 136 teachers.[15] During its Excellent Award Presentation Ceremony for the GCE 'O' Level and IGCSE Session 2018 at its new hall, Dewan Puteri, STPRI revealed that learning performance for 2018 had risen by 53% over 2017. 109 of the 202 students received five or more 'O' Level credits, and prizes were given to instructors and exceptional students throughout the event.[16]
Other informations
[edit]Apart from teaching skills to kids, the school also offers counselling services like educational and motivational seminars, courses and events. These characteristics include its ability to effectively manage student behavioural issues, its active participation in extracurricular activities and participation in national events.[5]
Through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Royal Brunei Police Force, STPRI became one of the first schools to create a Police Cadet Corps on 8 March 1977.[17]
