Raghunath Tribhuvandas Brahmbhatt also known as Raskavi (13 December 1892 – 11 July 1983) was an Indian poet and playwright from Gujarat known for his work in Gujarati theatre and Gujarati cinema.

Early Life

[edit]

Brahmbhatt was born to his parents, Tribhuvandas and Mohiba on 13 December 1892 in Linch, a village in British India (now in Mehsana district of Gujarat, India).[1] He completed his primary and higher secondary education at Nadiad.[1]

At the age of 17, he started his playwright career in Gujarati theatre with the play Buddhadev,[2] which was later staged by Arya Subodh Natak Mandali, a theatre troupe from Morbi.[1]

Controversy

[edit]

"Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal Chhed Gayo Re", a famous Song of Mughal-e-Azam was originally written by Raghunath Brahmbhatt.[3] The film features Shakeel Badayuni as the lyricist of the song. However, Brahmbhatt has been credited as the lyricist of the song in the colored version of the film, which was re-released on October 12, 2004.[4]

The song was originally panned by Brahmbhatt for Gujarati play, 'Chhatra Vijay', in 1920.[4][5][6] As per the report, Brahmbhatt approached to director K. Asif for the copyright. Later he filed a complaint to Film Writers’ Association and get a compensation of Rs 11,000 as royalty.[4]

"Saibo Maro Gulab no Chhod..." is a famous song written by Brahmbhatt.[7] He panned it for Gujarati play Hansakumari.[8]
