**RM Group** is a privately held business conglomerate headquartered in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. The group is led by the family of the late Babulal Jain, often referred to as the "501 Family."
RM Group comprises 10 companies operating across four countries: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Philippines. Its business interests include contract manufacturing, distribution, and related ventures. With approximately 4,000 employees, the group generates an annual revenue of ₹25 billion (approximately US$300 million). Major affiliated companies include R.M. Chemicals and RMJ Motors.
History
[edit]RM Group's origins trace back to the early 1900s in pre-independence India's Bhopal State. It began as a partnership firm, M/s. Rajrup Murlidhar Jain, trading in grains and agricultural commodities.
Early Expansion:
[edit]The group experienced its first significant growth phase under Babulal Jain (1923-1989), who joined the business at the age of 17. His mother, Gomti Bai Jain (1900-2000), had managed the enterprise after the early death of her husband. Babulal Jain expanded the business into cotton ginning and oil milling before venturing into distribution for companies like Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Gillette, and ACC Limited.
Modernization and Diversification:
[edit]The group's next growth phase occurred under the leadership of Mahendra Kumar Jain '501' (1946-2022), also known as Professor Mahendra Kumar Jain. Joining the business in the early 1970s after completing his master's degree in the United States, he led the group's modernization and diversification. This included establishing the group's first modern manufacturing facility in Dhule, Maharashtra, for the contract manufacturing of detergents for Unilever in the early 1990s.
Present Day:
[edit]Today, RM Group continues to be a prominent business group in India, with diversified interests and a significant presence in contract manufacturing and distribution across multiple countries.
