Narinder Kumar Singh (31 October 1937 – 17 February 2021) was an author, and academic. He was known as the founder of Foundation for Organizational Research and Education School of Management, a business school in India. He also served as the Chairman of the International Airports Authority of India and contributed significantly to Eastern Cross-Cultural Management and institutional development.

Early Life and Education

Singh was born on 31 October 1937 in Lahore, British India.

  • He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honors)University Medallist and Master of Arts in Psychology at the University of Delhi.
  • Fellow, National Institute of Personnel Management. Topped in the one-year Special Executive Development Programme of the Indian Institute of Public Administration.
  • He has lectured at McGill University, Montreal.
  • He has directed management seminars in Bangkok, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Brussels, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Jakarta and many other countries.
  • He was conferred Hony. Professorship by Morton Institute of Management, Brisbane, Australia.

Leadership Roles

Singh held various leadership roles during his career, as:

  • Chairman, International Airports Authority of India (1987–1989), overseeing critical infrastructure projects like the Agatti Airport in Lakshadweep.[1]
  • Founder & President, FORE School of Management, New Delhi, in 1981, to promote management education and research.[2]
  • Founder & President, Delhi School of Business[3] (1999)
  • Chairman, National Shipping Board (1992-1997)
  • Chairman, Management Development Institute (1985-1986), Gurgaon, India
  • Chief Executive, All India Management Association (1983-1985), India
  • Director, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), Bhilai, where he contributed to productivity and management initiatives.

Advisory Roles

Singh worked as:

  • Management Advisor, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) (1989–1991): Conducted research and consultancy for the governments of Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Malawi, and contributed to projects at ICAO Headquarters in Montreal.
  • Management Advisor, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Headquarters in New York: Studied key issues in performance, including human resource development and institutional effectiveness in Sub-Saharan countries. He co-authored a report on "Human Resources and Institutional Development," published by UNDP.
  • Board of Directors, Air India (1987-1989): Contributed to strategic decision-making and management for the national airline.
  • Member of the Board and Professor at Brussels School of Management, Brussels, for master in Cross-cultural management.

Social and Cultural Contributions

Tigri Experiment: Self Management of Urban Slums[4]. The Tigri Experiment was an initiative led by Prof. N. K. Singh in the Tigri slum area of New Delhi, India. The Planning Commission setup a task force to study and develop appropriate self-managing organisations and delivery systems for integrated development at village, block and district levels. This project aimed to empower slum residents by involving them directly in the planning and implementing development activities, thereby fostering community ownership and sustainable development.

  • His book, "Coronation of Shiva: Rediscovering Masrur Temple", highlights the architectural and historical significance of the site.[5]
