Biography
[edit]Petrus (nicknamed Pieter) Daens was born into a Flemish Catholic family in Aalst in 1842. As a young man, he became involved with the Flemish Movement.[2]
He became a printer in 1870 and publisher of the Catholic flamingant newspaper Het Land van Aelst ('The Land of Aalst'). He married Louise Mayart on 18 April 1876.
In 1893 he co-founded the Christian People's Party together with his brother, a Christian democratic and Flemish interests party that enjoyed some modest success in Aalst, yet never became mainstream. He served in the Chamber of Representatives from 1904 until 1918.[3]
Daens died on 26 March 1918, aged 75.
