Paolo Arrivabeni is an acclaimed Italian opera conductor, recognized as one of the most in-demand conductors of his generation.[citation needed] His extensive repertoire spans the works of 19th-century Italian composers, as well as Wagner, Strauss[who?], and Mussorgsky.

Early life and education

Arrivabeni graduated from the Arrigo Boito Conservatory of Music in Parma, where he earned a diploma in Composition and Orchestra Conducting. He further honed his skills at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under the mentorship of Maestro Daniele Gatti. His international career began with notable performances of Lucia di Lammermoor and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon.

Career

Arrivabeni's conducting career has seen him at the helm of some of the world's most prestigious opera houses. His 2024/2025 season includes significant productions such as Simon Boccanegra at the Opernhaus Zürich, Madama Butterflyat both the Opéra de Marseille and the Semperoper Dresden, Maria Stuarda at the Royal Danish Opera, Il Trovatore at the Staatsoper Hamburg, and Aida and Nabucco at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In the 2023/2024 season, he conducted Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci, and Tosca at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, made his house debut at Den Norsk Opera & Ballet with La Forza del Destino (concert form), and returned to the Opéra de Marseille and Staatsoper Hamburg for productions of Attila and Rigoletto, respectively. Other engagements included La Traviata at the Semperoper Dresden, Norma at the Staatsoper Hamburg, and Un Ballo in Maschera at the Opéra de Marseille.

Throughout his career, Arrivabeni has been a frequent guest conductor at major opera houses, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Semperoper Dresden, and Staatsoper Hamburg. He has also performed at the Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Opéra Bastille in Paris, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, among many others.

From 2008 to 2017, he served as the Music Director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, where he conducted a wide variety of operatic works, including Nabucco, Macbeth, La Traviata, Falstaff, Rigoletto, Boris Godunov, and Turandot, solidifying his reputation in the international opera scene.

Recordings

Arrivabeni has an extensive discography, having recorded numerous operas for labels such as Dynamic and Naxos. His recordings include Otello (2000), Ivanhoé (2002), Robert Bruce (2003), and Pia de’ Tolomei (2005) by Rossini and Donizetti, Norma (2007), Falstaff (2009), and I due Foscari (2020). His collaboration with Decca in 2022 included a recording with Freddie De Tommaso and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
