Legend

[edit]

The temple which is believed to have been installed by Kunti Devi, Mother of the Pandavas, has goddess Durga as the presiding deity. According to legend, each Pandavas had installed an idol of Lord Vishnu in the five places on the banks of the River Pampa and their mother installed Durga at Muthukulam. They developed an idol with clay and offered it 'Kadalipazham' a variety of banana. Still 'Kadalipazham' serving to goddess is practiced by devotees.

Devi Idol

It is said that Pujas were performed at Salagram along with the idol of Goddess Durga. The idol of Kunti Devi made of mud is still the original idol here.

The shrines installed by pandavas dedicated to Lord Vishnu at Thrichitat, Thiruppuliyoor, Thiruvaranmula, Thiruvanvandoor and Thrikkodithanam, located in central Kerala districts, are collectively called ‘Pandava Temples’ of the state.

The Thiruvutsavam here is a festival of the Muthukulam village celebrated in grandeur. The utsavam is in such a way that the first Aarat comes on the Pooram Nakshatra, which takes place in the Puyam Nakshatra of Kumbha month. The festival is held by the 5 karas associated with the temple. Celebrations are regular only after the Pooram Aarat. Daily Day Aaraat on Thiruvutsava days is a special feature of this temple.

Bhagwati who comes after aaratt is welcomed by malarpara. Seva in Pandavarkav is very famous on festival days. From the 4th to the 9th day, a very important festival sacrifice, called 'Utsava Bali' in Malayalam is performed as per Tantra Vidhi to increase the spirit of the Goddess.

During the festival, women take chamaya lamps which is a specialty of this temple. The procession of the Pandavarkavilamma accompanied by around five hundred decorated lamps is a sight to behold. The constant rolling procession, the grand procession on the 9th day of the festival, and the ceremonial retreat after the Palliveta are very important ceremonies.
