Draft:Pakistani military's business

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pakistani military's business refers to the various commercial enterprises and industries operated by the Pakistan Armed Forces.

According to Ayesha Siddiqa, the Pakistani military operates thousands of businesses and its private wealth may be as high as $20 billion, as of 2008. Additionally, the military controls approximately one-third of all heavy manufacturing in Pakistan.[1]

Entities

[edit]

In 2016, the Senate of Pakistan was briefed on the commercial enterprises run and owned by the Pakistan Armed Forces. During the briefing, then-Minister of Defence Khawaja Asif revealed that nearly 50 “projects, units, and housing colonies” across the country were managed by the Fauji Foundation, Shaheen Foundation, Bahria Foundation, Army Welfare Trust, and Defence Housing Authority.[2]

Specifically, the Army Welfare Trust oversees 15 projects or units, while the Fauji Foundation manages 15 projects, including one in Morocco. The Shaheen Foundation operates 11 projects, and the Defence Housing Authority has established eight housing colonies in major cities across the country. Additionally, the Bahria Foundation owns an offshore LNG tolling project.[2]

In May 2024, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry announced that institutions operating under the Pakistan Army deposited Rs260 billion in duties and taxes during the 2022-23 fiscal year.[3]

Criticism

[edit]

The military's involvement in business has also faced criticism. In February 2024, Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, during a court hearing, urged the Government of Pakistan to ensure that the armed forces concentrate solely on defense matters rather than engaging in commercial activities.[4] Later, in June 2024, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi stated in an interview, "Principally, the army’s job is not to do business. The institution should stay away from it as it leads to issues." [5]
