Draft:Outline of bodybuilding
Appearance
The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to bodybuilding:
Bodybuilding is the practice of progressive resistance exercise to build, control, and develop one's muscles via hypertrophy. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. It is primarily undertaken for aesthetic purposes over functional ones, distinguishing it from similar activities such as powerlifting and calisthenics.
What type of thing is bodybuilding?
[edit]Bodybuilding can be described as all of the following:
- Body modification – deliberate altering of the human body for any non-medical reason, such as aesthetics, sexual enhancement, a rite of passage, religious reasons, to display group membership or affiliation, to create body art, shock value, to make your $20 t-shirt uncomfortably tight, accompany your "fully sick" Holden SS Commodore, go with your 2006 G-Unit Snapback or self-expression.
- Exercise – bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health or wellness.
- Anaerobic exercise – exercise intense enough to trigger anaerobic metabolism. It is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power and by body builders to build muscle mass.
- Sport – form of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants.
- Competitive sport – sport in which one or more participants or teams compete against one another. The one that is the most successful in achieving the objective of the game or sport event is the winner.
- Recreational sport – sport engaged in as a leisure time activity.
- Spectator sport – sport that is characterized by the presence of spectators, or watchers, at its matches. Spectator sports are a form of entertainment.
- Professional sport – sport in which the athletes receive payment for their performance.
