Oreon[3] is a Linux distribution designed to offer a user-friendly and enhanced enterprise Linux experience right out of the box along with support for additional packages that cannot be found in other long-term supported Linux distributions.[4][5][6] It is characterized by its long-term support (LTS) distribution, providing extended lifecycles for its two main editions: Desktop Standard and Desktop Business+. Oreon is based on AlmaLinux[7][8], ensuring stability and compatibility.[3][9] Oreon follows free and open source licensing practices via GPL licenses.

History

[edit]

The development of the Oreon Project began in October 2022.[3] The first version, Oreon Lime R1, was released on January 1, 2024, initially based on Fedora. To fulfill the goal of providing long lifecycles, Oreon Lime transitioned to a base of AlmaLinux with the release of version R2. As of April 28, 2024, Oreon has achieved a milestone of 2,400 total downloads.[3][10][11]

Installation

[edit]

The official Oreon website provides ISO images which can be written to a storage device, such as a USB flash drive.[9] The website has a guide on how to install Oreon on your device, it recommends that you use Balena Etcher to write the ISO image to a preferred storage device. The guide also mentions that you must have at least two gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of storage available to install the operating system.[12] Oreon ships with GNOME as the default desktop environment, along with two editions, them being Desktop Standard and Desktop Business+ aiming to be for different use cases. Desktop Standard is for home users and provides packages for gaming, media, and entertainment while Desktop Business+ is for more heavy work and provides packages for businesses, schools, and developers.
