OpenStreetMap Ethiopia (OSM Ethiopia) is a local chapter of the global OpenStreetMap (OSM) initiative is dedicated to fostering the use of source geospatial tools, for community driven mapping projects in Ethiopia with a focus, on empowering local communities and aiding in various humanitarian and environmental endeavors within the nation.

History

The project was established by individuals passionate about information and supporters of open data initiatives. Particularly Binyam Dele a key figure, in the OSM Ethiopia community from the early days of its formation. The foundation evolved from the movement of OpenStreetMap that strives to offer map data that is open and easily accessible for all to utilize and contribute to. OSMEthiopia has played a role in organizing mapathons,hackathons and educational workshops that involve students well as professionals and volunteers, in collaborative mapping efforts.

OSM Ethiopia has seen an increase, in popularity for its involvement in mapping projects focused on regions impacted by conflict and environmental and health issues.The communitys contributions have played a role in developing maps that support organizations such, as the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) operating in Ethiopia.

Mission and Objectives

OpenStreetMap Ethiopias main goal is to create a map of Ethiopia that's freely available and incorporates local insights and requirements.The aims consist of;

  • Encouraging the utilization of geospatial information, for urban planning initiatives and emergency preparedness as well as fostering growth and progress, in communities.
  • Enabling residents and volunteers to participate in enhancing the OpenStreetMap platform.
  • Engaging with global collaborators to bolster efforts.
  • Fostering initiatives. Enhancing skills, in geospatial technologies.
  • Encouraging the implementation of data initiatives and transparent decision making processes grounded in geographic data.

Activities and Projects

  • Mapping Events and Mapathons

OSMEthiopia hosts mapathons and community mapping gatherings in collaboration, with universities NGOs and government organizations.These events promote participation from volunteers to contribute details such as roads, schools, healthcare facilities, and residential zones to the OSM platform.Mapathons commonly concentrate on regions facing crises, like areas impacted by calamities or unrest.

  • Humanitarian Efforts

The organization has played a role, in charting out regions lacking services for public health and emergency response needs contributing crucial information for disaster relief efforts such, as floods and enhancing healthcare accessibility overall. OSMEthiopia has further aided UN bodies and regional authorities by furnishing mapping details to assist in decision making processes and operational logistics.

  • Digitizing Public Transportation Systems

OSMEthiopia has made progress, in modernizing Addis Ababas public transportation system and other urban and rural transport systems.By sharing this information with the public the community aims to enhance city mobility,effectiveness, in transit and infrastructure development planning.

  • Educational Outreach and Training

The group is dedicated to enhancing skills in Ethiopia by offering instruction, in OpenStreetMap editing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to university students and young professionals well as civil society organizations.They aim to empower participants with the expertise for map creation and utilizing information, for analytical purposes and decision making processes.
