Oakland Lake is a small natural body of water located in Oakland Lake Park in the northeast Queens neighborhoods of Bayside and Oakland Gardens, New York City in New York state. The spring-fed glacial pond measures nearly 11 acres (4.5 ha), is about 20 ft (6.1 m) deep,[1] and is protected as part of Alley Pond Park. The land was originally settled by Dutch colonials in 1645 and the title to the lake was transferred to NYC Parks in 1934.
There is a pedestrian pathway paved around the lake that runs .6 miles and is lined with benches and footpaths to allow fishing access. Fish species found in Oakland Lake[2] include largemouth bass, bluegill sunfish, American eel, and common carp, among others. Large fowl regularly seen at Oakland Lake include ducks, swans, and geese, and many kinds of turtles can be observed sunbathing on the rocks and sunken tree logs that jet out of the water. NYC Bird Alliance and Queens County Bird Club offer bird watching nature walks in the protected area. Birding at NYC Parks posts a schedule of upcoming birding events.
Nearby landmarks include CUNY Queensborough Community College, Little Neck Bay, and the Cross Island Expressway.
