"Not All Heroes Wear Capes" is a song by American electronica act Owl City. It was released from his sixth studio album, Cinematic on June 16, 2017, as album's first single.[1]

Background

[edit]

"Not All Heroes Wear Capes" was announced on June 13, 2017, with a release date of June 16.[2] It was originally released as a non-album single, dedicated for Father's Day.[3] The song was later included in Reel 2 and his sixth studio album, Cinematic.[4][5] In interview with People, Adam Young stated, "For this Father's Day, I wrote 'Not All Heroes Wear Capes' to tell my dad I love him [...] This song is just my way of telling my dad how much I respect and appreciate him. I only hope to someday be as good of a man as he is. To everyone else, he is a normal guy, but to me he is a hero, and I just wanted to write him a little song to tell him so."[3]

Composition

[edit]

"Not All Heroes Wear Capes" has been described as a "synthy, country-tinged tune."[3]

Critical reception

[edit]

Christopher Smith of Jesus Freak Hideout gave a mixed review stating, "the straightforwardness of the lyrics does lose some of the magic that Owl City is known for, and that is only further hindered by predictable pop structures throughout the album." However, he described the track as one that "does strike an emotional chord."[5]

Music video

[edit]

On June 16, 2017, Owl City premiered an acoustic video for "Not All Hereos Wear Capes", which featured an appearance from his father, Randy Young. It was filmed in Owatonna, Minnesota, in his father's shop at home.[6]
