Nobigdyl.[1] is an American rapper, singer, festival director, and songwriter from Bell Buckle, Tennessee.[2] He is a former Middle Tennessee State University who started his rap career in 2015. He is known for his introspective music and his influential lyrics. He currently works under the record label of the Independent hip-hop collective he founded known as 'indie tribe'.
Early life
[edit]Phillips became attracted to the arts at a young age, beginning to rap at the age of 9 and becoming deeply involved in school theater and professional stage work at the age of 10, which was his initial gateway to performance arts and production. He also grew a love for hip-hop at a young age, growing an affinity for artists such as Notorious B.I.G. and Onyx and hanging posters of different artists on his room walls as a child. He was introduced to Christian hip-hop though at the age of 16. He later started to create his own music as part of a hip-hop group known as Southside Epidemic.[3]
Career
[edit]Phillips studied audio and production at Middle Tennessee State University before switching majors to focus on the business side of music later on. While managing another MTSU student’s hip-hop career, Phillips met record producer and Christian rapper Derek Minor who became a mentor to him at the time. He later received an internship from Reflective Music Group where he later moved up to a merchandising manager. During his time working at RMG, Minor invited Phillips to partner with him on a song he was working on for his "Empire" album. Phillips agreed and later featured on the song "All Hail the King". He later began working for Minor, but later got fired by him so that he could pursue his rap career. He released his first full album “Smoke Signal” on Christian Rap and Culture website Rapzilla after releasing a series of solo singles. In 2017, he released his album “Canopy” which became available on major platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. Phillips then released his album “Solar” in 2018, partnering with the Christian record label Capitol CMG. This album became his biggest hit at the time, becoming number 22 on Billboard’s Top Heat Seekers chart. He later left that label to continue releasing music independently[4]
In 2023, Nobigdyl's song PARABOLIC! was featured on Barack Obama's Summer Playlist.
He is known for his vulnerability in his music, as well as his 'buoyant optimism', 'feel good' style and upbeat lyrics throughout many of his songs.[5]
indie tribe
[edit]‘indie tribe’ was originally founded by Phillips in 2016. It started as a Christian Hip-Hop collective/record label that was described ‘as more of a loose alliance’ at that time. The collective then began with Phillips, as well as other Christian hip-hop artists such as Mogli the Iceburg, Jarry Manna, and WHATUPRG.
Later on, both Jerry Manna and WHATUPRG left the collective in 2020. In 2021, Christian Hip-Hop artists DJ Mykael V and Jon Keith both joined the group. They later released their first album as a collective “U P P E R H a N D” in 2021, and their second collective album, “L O W B L O W” in 2023. They later released their single “STILL HOLY” in 2023 where they introduced Torey D’Shaun as the newest member of the collective.[6][7][8]
Personal life
[edit]He is currently married to his wife Chelsea Phillips who is also his full-time business manager. The pair became married in 2014, and they currently both live in Tennessee. [9]
