Niyitegeka Gratien (born 25 November 1978), is a Rwandan film actor, comedian, and theatre performer. He is the writer and producer of a YouTube series, Papa Sava. He is also a poet. He was born form Ngarukiye Thacien and Mukarusharaza Bernadette, has Master's degree in Biology and Geography.

Personal life

Niyitegeka Gratien started creating his artistic journey when he was in primary six, started with poem writing and comedy. When he was in high school senior four, he acted in a theatre named "sirikoreye", in which he acted as the main actor which was under unity and reconciliation competition. The theatre won the country wide competition.

Because he was afraid of medical needles, he didn't want to become a doctor, which came to pass as he became an artist. He supported her family members by paying school fees for his sisters. Gratien is known as Seburikoko, Sekaganda, Papa Sava, and Ngagi. All these projects made him won many awards.

Education

He did his O' level at ES Rutongo, and A' level at Rurima College in Bugesera district in Geography, university at former KIE (now University of Rwanda, college of Education) in Biology and Geography education. He has a Master's degree from KIE.

Career

Once, the President, Paul Kagame, visited KIE. Gratien was selected to recite a poem. The President shook his hand, which was an unforgettable memory for him.[1] He won a third place in poem writing based on 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which began his career journey, and attending many festival abroad.

The most popular sitcom drama series in Rwanda,Papa Sava produced and writted by Gratien, streamed on YouTube with over 800,000 subscribers and 500,000 views weekly. The drama series introduced new comedians in the industry like Ndimbati, Digi Digi, Hatungi, and many others. Since its first release on YouTube in 2018, it has over 1,000 episodes and still producing.[2]

Seburikoko

Seburikoko is a Rwandan comedy TV series created by Misago Nelly Wilson, which started airing on the national TV since 2014. Seburikoko stars Gratien as a title character Seburikoko. It recounts a story of a man called Seburikoko who calls himself Sebu because he believes he is the richest man in the neighborhood, but does nothing to support his family.[2]

Shuwa Dilu

Gratien was stared in the Rwanda's first ever sitcom series Shuwa Dilu as Superi, a main actor alongside other two most known comedian in Rwanda Ramadhan aka Bamenya and Eric aka Dogiteri Nsabi.[3]

2023 - Gratien was nominated in RIMA under category of Male People Choice.[4]

2024 - Gratien is nominated in 2024 Mashariki African Film Festival(MAFF)'s Iziwacu awards under two categories:

- Best Film category for his Papa Sava drama series, and

- Best Director category.[5]
