Nessie Lane Atwood (born May 24th, 1998) is a radio host, musician, recording artist,[1] actress, film director and producer, known for the online vapor-wave style mini-series and radio show Sailing the Soundwaves (2018) and the interview based radio talk show The Man Behind the Music (2024) under the name Captain Lokknessie, or DJ Lokknessie.
She wrote, produced and starred in the comedic short film Weeds (2018). She is the writer of the drama television series The Uncommon Mortal. She is also the Program Director for KGUR Radio Station at Cuesta College.[2] She is related to famous Hollywood detective Fred Otash, of whom lead the criminal investigation of the late actress Marylin Monroe's death. Fred is her great uncle on her mother's side, Ninon Abisalih, who is the great granddaughter of Evelyn Abisalih, Fred's direct sibling.
Early life
[edit]She was born in Northridge, Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Morro Bay, California. She went to Morro Bay High School and graduated in the class of 2016. In her early years, she always had a fascination with radio. She grew up isolated and emotionally neglected, having never felt as though the people around her ever listened to what she had to say. This prompted her to seek a career where she could be given a voice.[3]
Career
[edit]As an adult, she studied Music Theory at Cuesta before entering the FTVE Program.[4] One of her educators at the college is George Stone, a composer and recording artist best known for his 1990 MIDI composition CANYON.MID ("Trip Through the Grand Canyon"), which was included in the MEDIA directory in Microsoft Windows versions 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions to 2000.[5] Through the Recording Arts classes taught by George, she obtained certification in Audio Production and Recording Arts.
She started her career as a radio host for KGUR Radio Station at Cuesta College in 2017, and was taught by professor John Arno. [6]That year she developed the undead, ghostly, sailor captain DJ persona Captain Lokknessie. The following year she released additional lore behind her DJ persona, inspired by glitch-core and vaporwave. The persona accidentally got trapped in a computer program. Mouse cursors are seen flying around the official photos and videos. The dark, yet unique twist on her persona flew her into popularity on the internet, particularly on Instagram, where has garnered a significant following.
Music career
[edit]On December 14th, 2023, she released a single called Bad Trip featuring the artist 8ball.exe. 8ball.exe, whose real name is Jacob Miller, is a radio host for KGUR, as well as a voice actor, going by the name DJ FlapJack. He inspired her to start making her own beats, and together they produced the track. The song is inspired by The Backrooms, and tripping while high on life.[7]
Nessie released a cover of the song Past Lives by Slushii and sapientdream on May 9th, 2024[8]. In July, she released another cover of the song On Melancholy Hill by Damon Albarn, ‘On Squilancholy Hill’. On the cover of the song is a reference to Bold and Brash, a painting from the television series Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon.[9]
On September 20th, 2024, she released the Lo-fi beat ‘i tried’, which has no vocals.[10] In the following months she began work on the EP ‘all my friends suck’ which has three tracks[11], and the single ‘parasocial’. The single is about the perspective of a celebrity in a stalker fan situation. The term ‘parasocial’ refers to a one-sided connection between a person and a media figure or fictional character that they don't know in real life.[12]
Infuences
[edit]Nessie grew up listening to Cat Stevens, Tom Petty, Audioslave, The Shins, Green Day and Blue October. Later on she discovered Tally Hall, Jack Stauber, Joji and Twenty One Pilots. The lead singer of Tally Hall, Joe Hawley, is featured on multiple of her radio shows. She is also said to be a good friend of Joe, being a huge supporter to his music career for the past 5 years. She has mentioned in her shows that he was one of the sweetest, most genuine people she has ever met.
