Nemrud is a Progressive Rock band from Istanbul/Turkey, formed in 2008. Known for their conceptual albums and a musical style reminiscent of the 1970s progressive rock era, the band has garnered critical acclaim both in Turkey and internationally.

History

[edit]

Nemrud was founded in 2008 by Mert Göçay, Aycan Sarı and Harun Sönmez by the vision of crafting music deeply rooted in the traditions of progressive rock. The band spent its initial years refining their sound, drawing inspiration from the genre's pioneers while developing their unique voice. This period of exploration and experimentation allowed them to create a solid foundation for their artistic identity.[1][2][3][4]

Band Name and Conceptual Roots

[edit]

The name Nemrud is derived from Mount Nemrut, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Turkey, renowned for its ancient history and monumental statues. This sacred mountain, dating back thousands of years, was once believed to be the center of the world in ancient mythology.[5][6][7] Reflecting this profound cultural and historical significance, Nemrud chose the site as the setting for the narrative of their debut album, Journey of the Shaman (2010). The album's story unfolds against the mystical backdrop of Mount Nemrut, weaving a rich tapestry of mythology, spirituality, and existential exploration.[8][4]

Album Concepts

[edit]

Journey of The Shaman (2010)

[edit]
Journey of The Shaman (2010)

In 2010, after two years of dedicated songwriting and rehearsals, Nemrud released their debut album, Journey of The Shaman is a conceptual work that explores a mystical and spiritual journey. The story follows a shaman (Mitos) embarking on an existential quest, set against the ancient and mythical backdrop of Mount Nemrut. As the protagonist seeks enlightenment, the album delves into themes of self-discovery, spirituality, and the connection between humanity and the cosmos. Its narrative unfolds in a progressive rock framework, blending atmospheric soundscapes with thought-provoking lyrics.[9] The Album consists of three tracks, each symbolizing one of the three worlds in Shamanic belief: the Upper World, the Middle World, and the Lower World. These realms represent the spiritual dimensions that a shaman traverses during their journey to seek wisdom and enlightenment.[3]

The album cover reflects this triadic structure through its use of three distinct colors, symbolizing the interconnected yet distinct nature of these worlds. The music complements this concept with an atmospheric and transcendental quality, inviting listeners to embark on their own introspective journey.[10]

Ritual (2013)

The band's second album, Ritual, expands upon the philosophical and existential themes introduced in their debut. This time, the narrative explores the rituals and traditions of ancient civilizations, reflecting on humanity's timeless search for meaning and purpose. With its intricate compositions and rich storytelling, Ritual creates a bridge between the mystical past and the spiritual questions of modern life. The music evokes a sense of transcendence, inviting listeners to participate in a journey of introspection.[11][12]

Nemrud (2016)

In their self-titled third album, Nemrud, the band delves into themes of cosmic exploration and the human condition. The story takes a futuristic turn, blending science fiction elements with the band's signature spiritual and philosophical undertones. The protagonist ventures into the vast unknown of the universe, mirroring humanity's eternal curiosity and quest for understanding. The album showcases a balance of technical prowess and emotional depth, offering an immersive experience that resonates with both fans of progressive rock and seekers of profound narratives. The cover art for Nemrud's third album, Nemrud (2016), was created by renowned artist Betül Dengili Atlı, who is celebrated for her work on iconic album covers, including some for Led Zeppelin, Erkin Koray in the 1970s. Her distinctive artistic style adds a timeless and evocative visual element to the album, perfectly complementing the band's cosmic and philosophical themes.[13][3]

Lineup Changes

[edit]

Following the release of their debut album, Journey of The Shaman (2010), Nemrud experienced several lineup changes, which played a significant role in shaping the band's evolving sound. Mert Göçay has been the only constant member of Nemrud since its founding in 2008. Drummer Mert Alkaya joined the band right after the debut album relase in 2010. Before self-titled album release bass guitar player Levent Candaş joined Nemrud and played in two festivals in Turkey. While the original lineup laid the foundation for their conceptual and atmospheric style, the inclusion of new members brought fresh perspectives and influences to their music.[1][3]

Despite these transitions, Nemrud maintained their commitment to the core principles of progressive rock—complex compositions, thematic storytelling, and emotional depth. Each iteration of the band contributed to the refinement of their sound, ensuring their music remained dynamic and relevant within the progressive rock genre.[13][4]

Musical Style

[edit]

Nemrud's music is deeply rooted in the traditions of progressive rock, a genre that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Characterized by its elaborate song structures, thematic depth, and instrumental virtuosity, progressive rock serves as the foundation of the band's sound. Nemrud seamlessly blends these classic elements with a modern approach, creating a timeless yet innovative auditory experience.[3] The band draws significant influence from iconic pioneers of the genre, such as Pink Floyd, Eloy, Camel and Yes. This inspiration is evident in their use of atmospheric soundscapes, extended instrumental passages, and conceptual storytelling. Like their predecessors, Nemrud often constructs albums that revolve around a central theme or narrative, immersing listeners in a cohesive and introspective journey.[1]

Their music frequently explores philosophical and existential themes, incorporating lush melodies, dynamic shifts, and a meticulous balance between complexity and accessibility. Nemrud's compositions often feature intricate guitar solos, emotive keyboard arrangements, and rhythmically diverse percussion, reflecting the hallmarks of progressive rock while retaining a distinct identity.[11][13]

In addition to the classic prog influences, Nemrud occasionally incorporates elements from other genres, such as psychedelic rock, symphonic rock, and even touches of Eastern musical motifs, adding depth and originality to their sound.
