Nehat Bellçishta (1933–2012) was a prominent professor and cultural figure in Debar, Macedonia. He was the founder of the Association "Perpjekja" and played a key role in promoting Albanian education and culture throughout North Macedonia.

Early Life

Nehat Bellçishta was born in 1933 in Debar, North Macedonia, to Sali and Jumnije Bellçishta. From an early age, him and his other siblings Atli Bellçishta and Lamiko Bellçishta demonstrated a passion for education. At just 17, Bellçishta began his teaching career in Vrapçishtë, Gostivar, and worked tirelessly to spread education and eradicate illiteracy among Albanians in Macedonia. His wife Gezime Hoxha Bellçishta was also in the education profession for many years of her life.

Education and Career

Bellçishta completed his studies in Tirana, Skopje, and later at the University of Belgrade, where he graduated in Albanology. He was a pivotal figure in the establishment of the "Perpjekja Association", an organization dedicated to the promotion of Albanian cultural and national values in the former Yugoslavia. Through this association, Bellçishta organized numerous cultural events aimed at strengthening national identity and awareness among Albanian students.

As a professor, Bellçishta taught at the "28 Nëntori" Gymnasium in Debar, North Macedonia, where he worked for many years. He played an instrumental role in opening the gymnasium, which became one of the most important educational institutions in the region. Bellçishta taught Albanian language, literature, history, and Latin, often extending beyond his subject specialization to serve the needs of his students.

In addition to his work at the gymnasium, he contributed to the opening of the first Albanian University in North Macedonia, the State University of Tetova, and assisted in the development of new schools in Debar and its surrounding areas.

Role in Society

Bellçishta was a well-respected figure in society, recognized not only for his professional expertise but also for his personal integrity. He continuously faced political challenges, but his unwavering commitment to education remained his priority. Bellçishta's efforts left an indelible mark on his students and the Dibra community.

Retirement and Legacy

After a career spanning 47 years, Bellçishta retired from teaching but remained a beloved and respected figure in his community. He often expressed his deep love for the teaching profession, stating in an interview with the newspaper "Flaka e Vëllazërimit" that there is "nothing more beautiful and humane" than teaching. His contributions to education and culture are fondly remembered, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Death

Nehat Bellçishta passed away in 2012 in Debar, North Macedonia, leaving behind a rich legacy in Albanian education and culture.
