History

[edit]

The district of Potonico located in Chalatenango Sur, Chalatenango, El Salvador remained a very recondite place near the shores of the Lake Suchitlán. Due to the Salvadoran Civil War many inhabitants from different towns in El Salvador had to flew away abroad to avoid the dangers and effects of the war. One of those was, María Vides, born in Potonico[2]; one day the desire to leave her mark on the place that gave her birth emerged.Together with her hardworking husband, Celio Adiel Abarca, started a project called "Museo Caserío Los Vides" which sought to rescue the long-forgotten memories of those local inhabitants who unfortunately perished and disappeared during the civil war, being one of those Maria Vides' father, Juan Ramón Vides Tobar who made a living as a fisherman. As a tribute to his memory, a marble sculpture was built inside the installations of the museum. Also, the museum seeks to preserve the history of the district of Potonico especially the area where it is built, Los Vides village which used to be inhabited, but vanished when the Cerrón Grande Dam was constructed, yet only one house remained from the village, the one where Maria and her family lived, which it's also in display next to the museum."[3]
