Tashan Daniel was a 20 year old athlete who was stabbed to death at Hillingdon Underground Station on 24 September 2019 as he made his way to watch Arsenal play Nottingham Forest. In August 2020, following a trial at the Central Criminal Court, and Jonathan Camille were convicted respectively of his murder and manslaughter.[1] [2] [3]
The stabbing of Tashan Daniel occurred during an outbreak of spontaneous violence at the station. Lanning had exchanged words with Tashan Daniel and his friend, Treyone Campbell, who were on the opposite platform across the train tracks. After a few seconds, Lanning crossed the footbridge linking the platforms to confront the pair. As he did so he was joined by Camille.
The assault itself lasted a matter of seconds: Lanning struck the first blow, punching Campbell. A fight ensued, and then split into two parts, with Lanning facing off against Tashan Daniel and Camille against Treyone Campbell. Lanning pulled out a knife and delivered a fatal blow, stabbing Tashan Daniel in the chest. It penetrated the 20-year-old's lung and heart and cut into his breastbone, a pathologist told jurors, adding that he lost two-fifths of his blood. [4] [5] The pair were not tracked down until 10 days later in central London. [6] [7] [8]
Weapon
[edit]Tashan Daniel was stabbed in the heart by Lanning with a £200 German-made Aviator 1 knife, which the court heard had been "designed for NATO military aircraft rescues with the capacity to saw through laminated glass and cut through seatbelts".
Alex Lanning had claimed he came into possession of it when he had been working on the latest Fast & Furious action movie F9 by Warner Bros.[9][10]
Trail
[edit]Lanning had admitted Mr Daniel's manslaughter but claimed the stabbing was an accident. The court had heard how Mr Daniel and his friend Treyone Campbell were confronted by the killers after Lanning had asked Mr Daniel "what he was looking at" across the Tube tracks. Lanning was seen by two separate witnesses apparently laughing about the attack.
Mr Campbell said "violence erupted" and Lanning and Mr Daniel broke off into a fight on the platform. The court heard Lanning had previously been jailed for wounding a man with a knife in Brighton in July 2016 and was caught with 250 wraps of heroin at the time of that attack.
Jailing Lanning for life with a minimum term of 25 years and Camille for six-and-a-half years, Judge Mark Dennis QC said: “This was a disgraceful display of violence for which there was no possible justification or excuse
He said Camille had willingly participated in the attack and done nothing to restrain Lanning.Judge Mark Dennis QC said he would sentence both defendants at the same court on 20 August. [11] [12] [13]
